Arrogance in Public Service

A king named Zhang Yong ruled the southern province of China. He had appointed officers to each towns and villages to hear the grievances of the people in those towns and to rectify the same instantly. One of them was Wang Tsu, who was appointed an officer in a town. He discriminated against every human being in every way. He behaved arrogantly towards the poor and the simple, and politely towards the rich and those in power and popularity. The petitions of the poor were also considered by him late.
Many stood speechless, unable to rebuke him for such behavior. His transgression went on like this for many days. One day it reached the ear of King Zhang Yong. The king took off his clothes and went to Wang Tsu’s office, dressed as a layman. When the King extended his hand to hand over a petition to Wang Tsu, he ordered him to go outside and wait. The king, too, politely went outside and waited. Meanwhile, Wang Tsu heard that one of the King’s servants was coming to meet him and Wang Tsu was waiting at the door to receive him.  The King’s servant, who had arrived, gave to Wang Tsu a letter and left. Wang Tsu, who had opened and read it, was sweating profusely in shock. It was written as "The king has been waiting a long time to meet you. You have ignored him and made him waited for a long time". He looked at everyone standing outside the door. There was one of them waiting was the king in a layman attire. He went straight to and fell at the king's feet, "King! Forgive me. I did not expect you to come to the laity like this. So I kept you waiting. If you had called I would have come myself for you!" he screamed. The king said to him, "So you did not value King Zhang Yong and his honor, but only my royal attire and my royal position." Then the king stripped him of his office and ordered him to be flogged a hundred times.

Today, in some Third world countries, some who work in public service (private firms), in government banks, in government hospitals discriminate against the poor, the layman in one way of approach and the rich, the powerful in another way. These practices can be seen even in senior mature elder public servants working in some government banks. They earn income from the government (from the people’s money) to do the work of the people. To do it, they pride themselves with arrogance, insertion, disrespect and bribe.(corresponding suitable name bribe - theft, begging, looting).  Arrogance and Ego is found in elder low level cadre people in these time in offices and banks but in younger (Physicians) people in health services.

“They close their hearts to pity; with their mouths they speak arrogantly.”   (Psalm 17:10)

“Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.” (1 Samuel 2:3)

“I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; I will put an end to the pomp of the arrogant, and lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless.”  (Isaiah 13:11)
